Empower acquires MassMutual’s retirement business

January 5, 2021

Effective January 4, 2021, Empower Retirement (Empower) acquired the retirement plan business of MassMutual, one of the State ORP service providers. Right now, the biggest change you'll see is the Empower logo on MassMutual’s State ORP participant website and its Total Retirement Center. Website addresses, the call center phone number, the State ORP service team and login credentials will remain the same. Over time, Empower will transition the plan over to the Empower experience. Current MassMutual State ORP participants will receive a communication about the acquisition from Empower soon.

Over the coming weeks, PEBA will edit publications, forms, and its website to reflect Empower as a State ORP service provider. The acquisition will not change the State ORP annual open enrollment opportunity currently taking place. State ORP participants who are interested in changing to Empower should select the MassMutual option in Member Access during open enrollment. State ORP participants currently with MassMutual who do not want to remain with Empower as their service provider may choose AIG Retirement Services, TIAA or Voya in Member Access. Participants who use Form 1162 to request their provider change may use either name on the form when requesting to change to or from Empower (formerly MassMutual).

Remember the open enrollment period ends on March 1, 2021, and any service provider changes elected during open enrollment do not become effective until April 1, 2021.
